March is all about celebrating women and their incredible contributions—and the baking world is no exception! From inventing iconic desserts to transforming the way we bake, women have shaped kitchens and pastry shops for generations.
This Women’s History Month, let’s honor the trailblazing women who made baking history and gave us some of our most beloved treats!
The Inventor of Chocolate Chip Cookies
Love chocolate chip cookies? You can thank Ruth Graves Wakefield for that! In the 1930s, while running the Toll House Inn, she added chopped Nestlé chocolate to her cookie dough, expecting it to melt. Instead, the chocolate held its shape—giving birth to the first-ever chocolate chip cookie. Her accidental invention became the iconic Nestlé Toll House recipe, now a beloved treat worldwide!
America’s First Chocolate Cake Recipe
Before chocolate cake became a celebration staple, Eliza Leslie made history. In 1847, she published the first true American chocolate cake recipe, using finely grated chocolate instead of just cocoa powder. She also added nutmeg and cinnamon, enhancing the rich flavor we love today. Her work shaped the way we bake with chocolate!

Lemon Pies and Tarts
In medieval times, lemon pies were made by flavoring custard with lemons. The Romans called them Medinans, importing them from present-day Iran. By 1289, Spain gifted lemons to England’s Queen Eleanor, and Columbus carried them to the New World.
But it was in 1806, when Elizabeth Goodwell from Philadelphia created the first lemon meringue pie, using leftover egg whites to whip up a light, airy topping. Our lemon tart is prepared in the traditional way, but we will be happy to make the pie and add meringue on request!
